Instructions
- Heat the Water:
Begin by heating 700 ml of water in a saucepan. Use a thermometer to bring the temperature to around 70°C (not boiling). - Add the Saffron:
Add 100 g of saffron to the heated water. Stir gently with a wooden spoon to help the saffron dissolve and release its beautiful color and flavor. - Add the Sugar:
Stir in 700 g of sugar and continue stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved in the saffron-infused water. - Optional Cognac:
Once the sugar is dissolved, allow the syrup to cool. If you wish, add 700 ml of cognac for an extra depth of flavor, but this is completely optional. - Store the Syrup:
Pour the finished saffron syrup into a clean, tightly sealed bottle or jar. Let it cool completely and store it in a cool, dark place. For the best flavor, allow the syrup to sit for at least 1–2 weeks before using.
Type of Saffron
For the best results, choose a high-quality saffron such as Persian saffron or Spanish saffron. These types are known for their deep, aromatic flavor and vibrant color. Always look for saffron threads rather than powdered saffron to ensure authenticity and a more intense flavor.
Storage
Saffron syrup can be stored for up to a year, and if you have leftover syrup, you can keep it and use it the next baking season. It’s a great way to ensure you have saffron flavor readily available without needing to prepare a new batch each year.
By making your own saffron syrup, you ensure that every bake is filled with authentic, rich saffron flavor. Enjoy using it in all your saffron-inspired recipes, and make sure to store any leftovers for next season’s baking adventures!
